Erva Helen Hoffman, 96, formerly of Caledonia, died Thursday, January 19th, 2017, in Marion, Ohio. She was born on February 13th, 1920 in Clarksburg, KY., and was one of 15 children. She was the daughter of Charles and Virginia Sartin. She will be greatly missed by her daughter Sharon E. Cass, who survives, and son-in-law Ronald A. Cass, of Caledonia; three grandchildren: Jonathan L. Cass, Caledonia; Mindi S. Day (Tim) Lexington, KY.: and Kara T. Funk (Joshua) Perrysburg, Ohio. She is also survived by nine great-grandchildren: Joshua Day, Hannah Day, Eli Day, Lydia Funk, Isaac Funk, Micah Funk, Phoebe Funk, Eden Funk and Josiah Funk. She also loved her "granddogs:" Chester and Cyrus.
Mrs. Huffman came from Kentucky to Caledonia in 1936 and on December 23rd, 1939 she married Harold A. Hoffman, who preceded her in death in 1994. They were married for 54 years. She was devoted to her family, caring for and loving her bedridden husband in their home during a prolonged illness of two years.
During World War II she worked in the Scioto Ordnance Plant near Marion and later worked at North Electric in Galion, and at the U. S. Post Office in Caledonia.
Known as the "pie lady", she loved to bake. She was especially noted for her apple and pecan pies and ginger cookies. She loved to tell people that these recipes were published in the Columbus Dispatch in the Wednesday food column. Mrs. Hoffman was a faithful member of the Caledonia Church of Christ where she attended for many years. She was proud of having read through her Bible, from Genesis to Revelation, six times. An avid reader, her favorite authors were Lori Wicks and Janette Oak.
Calling hours will be held at Timson Allen & Melroy Funeral Home, Caledonia, on Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. and on Monday from 10 to 11 a.m. Services will immediately follow at 11:00. Burial will be in Caledonia Cemetery. Memorial Contributions may be made to the Caledonia Church of Christ.
